RAMBAN: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested a Patwari in Ramban district red-handed for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 2500.
A statement said the accused, Muzamil Salam, who was posted in Patwar Halqa Pogal Paristan, had allegedly demanded Rs 20,000 from a complainant for correcting an error in the name of the complainant's father in the revenue records.
It said the complainant had approached the Tehsildar Ukhral for the correction, who in turn directed the Patwari to take necessary action.
"After negotiations, the bribe amount was settled at Rs 2500," the statement said.
Unwilling to pay the bribe, it said, the complainant approached the ACB, which conducted a discrete verification, confirming the demand.
Accordingly, a case FIR number 03/2025 under section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act was registered at Police Station ACB Doda and investigation was taken up, it said.
Subsequently, the statement said, a trap was laid by a team led by a Gazetted Officer and the accused revenue official, a resident of Kaskoot, tehsil Banihal, district Ramban, was arrested red-handed while accepting the bribe in the presence of independent witnesses.
"While the bribe amount has been recovered from the possession of the accused Patwari, further investigation has been set into motion," the statement said.
