Awareness programme organized at Bijbehara to mark International Day against Drug Abuse

ANANTNAG: In observance of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Drug Control Authority Anantnag, in collaboration with the Chemists and Druggists Association Bijbehara, today organized an awareness-cum-education programme.

The event witnessed active participation from various stakeholders including students of Boys Higher Secondary School Zirpara, civil society members, and chemists from Arwani, Sangam, Tulkhun, Zirpara, and adjoining areas of Tehsil Bijbehara.

The programme aimed to educate the participants on the steps needed for the elimination of drug and substance abuse.

Key speakers included Drug Control Officers of Anantnag, SDPO Bijbehara, students from HSS Zirpara, and representatives of the local chemist fraternity. They highlighted the severe hazards and ill effects of drug abuse and emphasized the collective responsibilities of chemists, civil society, and law enforcement in combating the menace.

Chemists and healthcare providers were sensitized about the warning signs and red-flag indicators of substance abuse, and were urged to remain vigilant in identifying suspicious activities related to addiction.

Following the awareness session, all participants took a pledge to fight against drug abuse. A rally comprising students, chemists, and members of civil society was also conducted, starting from Boys Higher Secondary School Bijbehara and culminating at the Town Hall Bijbehara.

Speaking on the occasion, SDPO Bijbehara stressed the need for chemists to work with zeal and commitment for the betterment of society. He urged them to keep a strict vigil on addiction-related activities and report any suspicious behavior to the law enforcement authorities.

Drug Control Officer Anantnag emphasized the shared responsibility of all stakeholders in eradicating drug and substance abuse. He also directed chemists to dispense pharmaceutical preparations with addiction liability strictly in accordance with valid, signed prescriptions from registered medical practitioners.

Drug Control Officers from Kokernag and Pahalgam also addressed the gathering and shared valuable insights and suggestions, reinforcing the collective approach needed to curb the drug menace.
