JAMMU: For the first time in the history of Dogri theatre, Jammu witnessed a groundbreaking 90-minute solo performance that captivated audiences and marked a significant milestone in regional performing arts.

Chanchlo, presented by Rangyug - Theatre for Self-Realization and Social Change, brought solo storytelling to the forefront, combining powerful performance, regional language, and a socially resonant narrative.

Designed and directed by veteran theatre personality Deepak Kumar and sponsored by the J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages (JKAACL), Chanchlo is an adaptation of Nadira Zaheer Babbar's acclaimed Hindi play Sakubai.

The Dogri version was masterfully translated and performed solo by RJ Juhie Mohan, who delivered a moving and dynamic portrayal that held the audience spellbound throughout the uninterrupted 90-minute act.

Set in urban Jammu, the play follows the journey of a domestic worker who migrates from a rural village in search of livelihood. Her story-told through humor, emotion, irony and resilience-sheds light on the often-unseen lives of working-class women and touches on issues of migration, exploitation and the dignity of labor.

The historic performance was attended by an array of dignitaries and cultural stalwarts, including Padma Shri Dr Lalit Mangotra; Suresh Kumar Sharma, Retired Sessions Judge & Member, SMVDSB; Harvinder Kour, Secretary, JKAACL; Nagendra Singh Jamwal, Special Secretary, J&K Government; and Dr Javaid Rahi, Secretary, Kala Kendra.

The event also drew personalities from theatre, media, literature, and academia, as well as numerous art lovers and theatre enthusiasts from across the region.

The production featured music and sound by Shivan Gupta; lighting design by Ashish Sharma and Pankaj Sharma; costumes by Anuradha; and makeup by Shammi Dhamir. Backstage and production support came from Neharika, Raj Kumar Behrupia, Soham Kashyap, Sumit, Akrit, Poonam, Kabir and KS Home Store.
