GDC Samba hosts panel on empowering J&K women

SAMBA: In a progressive stride towards gender parity and women empowerment, Shri Pt. Prem Nath Dogra Government Degree College, Samba hosted a Panel Discussion and Felicitation Ceremony on the theme "Building a More Inclusive Future: Empowering the Women of Jammu and Kashmir."

The event was held in collaboration with the Social Welfare Department, Samba, Take One Television Network, and Jamkash Trucking Pvt. Ltd.

The programme began with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp and felicitation of the dignitaries, followed by a warm welcome address by Principal Prof. (Dr.) Twinkle Suri, who reiterated the college's commitment to nurturing morally upright and socially responsible youth in alignment with the theme of inclusivity.

Dr. Sheikh Ajaz Bashir, Director Colleges, Higher Education Department, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. In his keynote address, he emphasized the importance of creating a conducive educational ecosystem where young women are encouraged to lead with confidence.

He highlighted that knowledge coupled with skill development is the key to true empowerment. He also appreciated the initiative of organising a meaningful discussion and reiterated the need to conduct such programmes on a mass level, where young minds can engage with thought leaders and broaden their perspectives on critical societal issues.

Kuwarni Dr. Ritu Singh, a royal descendant and renowned social activist, Special Invitee, chaired the panel. In her address, she passionately advocated for inclusivity as a social responsibility rather than charity, urging the youth to become active contributors to nation-building by fostering respect, compassion, and equality in all spheres of life.She exhorted full support in developing GDC Samba as a hub of excellence in skill development more-so for promoting local crafts, and agro economy.

The panel featured accomplished professionals from diverse fields-Payal Saraf, a celebrated entrepreneur and interior designer, shared her journey of building meaningful spaces that radiate emotion and elegance. She inspired the students by emphasizing that one doesn't need to start big to pursue a dream. She encouraged young women to take the first step by launching their ventures on a modest scale with zeal and passion and making the most of the support available through various government schemes and initiatives for startups.

Mitali Gupta, a leading nutritionist, discussed the pivotal role of holistic health and balanced nutrition in empowering women. She highlighted the vital connection between emotional well‑being and nutrition, underscoring how a balanced diet not only nourishes the body but also fosters mental resilience and a vibrant, healthy life. She further emphasized the critical role of personal and environmental hygiene in sustaining a healthy, resilient lifestyle.

Himani Parihar, a young and promising legal professional currently serving as Munsif Samba, provided valuable insights into legal rights and protections available to women. She addressed the critical issues of domestic violence outlining the avenues for free legal aid and the importance of awareness around cybercrime protections to ensure safety and justice for all women.

A signature campaign on empowerment, wellness, and inclusivity was also launched during the event, urging students to pledge solidarity for a more just and equal society.

The event included a felicitation ceremony wherein Take One Television Network & Jamkash Trucking Pvt. Ltd. under the leadership of Devyani Rana honoured meritorious female students of the college for their outstanding academic achievements.

Nawaz Sharif District Social Welfare Officer from Social Welfare Department, Samba also felicitated dedicated female non-teaching staff of the college for their committed service. Both organisations shared their vision in supporting youth empowerment, highlighting their collaborative efforts with academic institutions to promote inclusive development through media and industry platforms and social welfare schemes.

The event concluded with a formal vote of thanks by Convener Women Development Cell, Assoc. Prof. Sarabpreet Kour and a soulful rendition of the National Anthem.
